Installing Aluminum Dead Pedal

Getting ready to install my new set of aluminum pedals in my '99 Boxster and was wondering if anyone has any experience with the dead pedal. The set came with some stainless sheet metal screws for this pedal - I'm reluctant to just go ahead and drill some pilot holes and run these screws on in. Is there anything I should know about behind this dead pedal area that could be damaged? And, should the original rubber dead pedal be left in place or removed first?

Thanks in advance
