Steve Tinker Thanks.

Is it recommended that I test all fuses "before" I put in the new battery?

Thanks

SR

You are not the only one to have done this. Here is a thread from Rennlist:

reversed battery polarity-FINAL REPORT - Rennlist Discussion Forums

His damages were an alternator and a fuse.

TeamOxford 02-25-2014 07:02 AM

Best case scenario: Some fuses, diodes, and relays are blown.

Worst case: The above, plus the alternator is toast, maybe the voltage regulator. You might have some warning lights, and the gauges may not work properly.

In your case, I'd have a professional look at it. The car should start with the battery installed correctly, but I'd check with the professional first.

Just to double check yourself, the negative cable (drivers side) is a short cable that goes directly to a ground stud. You should be able to see the stud.

Finally installed the new battery - this time the right polarity - Thanks Y'all for the guidance. Fancy not noting the tiny + and - impressions on the ends of each cable :(

Anyway, the following steps happened.

1. The windows wound down a bit when I tried to open the doors - normal.
2. I could lower the spoiler with the button on the console
3. Did not see the Radio come on - perhaps a blown fuse - Was unable to determine which on on the tiny booklet.
4. PSM Warning error came but once I cranked the motor and it started right up and I drove around the block "slowly" it went off.
5. The Airbag light remained on.
6. I got a Battery/Generator Error in Red with an "!" on the dash.
7. Heard a not so normal sound for the first few minutes when the engine was running and then all normal.

I suspect the Alternator/Diode is toast! Off I went to RAC Performance in Carrolton TX for them to have a look - Don't have the "you know what" to further poke around the car now! BTW, any idea how much an alternator costs?

Hopefully it's just the Alternator and a few fuses - Hans at RAC Performance will get back to me tomorrow to say what's the damage - I call this "Stupid Tax" which I think every Wannabe DIY will have to pay!

Will keep you all posted on what happens.

Cheers

Just spoke to RAC - It's the alternator that's shot :( and some fuses.

New one quoted at $1500+installation but Hans has been kind enough to look for Rebuilt/Salvaged ones out here.

Any advise on this will be appreciated.

how many miles are on that alternator?

When did the factory warranty expire?

Good grief, that's exorbitant!

Autozone sells a Durlast reman for $228.00. I've bought a reman from them in the past and have not had a problem. They will ship to your door, and you just bring the core back to your local Autozone when the job is complete.

Just sayin'..............

$1500.00 ?????

Agree! Too big a bucks.
Look, I'm a shade tree mechanic (at best) on a good day, but I can follow instructions with the best of them.

An alternator R/R is about 2 hours max, start to finish. That included disconnecting the battery, removing the passenger seat etc. It's not a hard job, just have to have some basic tools and a little patience.

I'm sure the bill includes his troubleshooting and reseting airbag light etc but it sure seems high....like he's quoting your 15 hours @$100/hour.

BTW, I'd bet your entire alternator is not bad, just the voltage regulator, which on 986's costs about $50 and takes 10 minutes to replace once the alternator is out.

Best of luck...

Guys, its RUF auto center. Not brake-o-rama.

With their big spending clientele they price accordingly. :)

I would suggest the Autozone Duralast. I have had excellent experience with them. They are now the only alternator I will buy.

Actually it's a place called RAC Performance. A local place here in the FT Worth/Dallas area. They have a good rep, but they do have an nice shop;)

Thanks for the feedback - While the original Porsche unit ws $1500, was able to source a Bosch unit for like $500. Will keep you posted on how this turns out....

Not sure if I am brave enough (now after blowing up the alternator) to replace it myself.....maybe in a few months I will have enough courage!

Just to say the Boxster is back from shop. All is good. Also got an oil change done while there.

Drives like a charm - as usual.

Thanks everyone for your guidance and support.

Cheers

Glad to hear! Hopefully you got a drive in before the cold arrives!

RawleyD 03-02-2014 10:06 PM

Yikes, that was an expensive lesson! Glad all is taken care of :)

sudheendrar 03-03-2014 09:40 AM

Yes y'all expensive lesson it was - but I would call it "Stupidity Tax" :)

Wonder if the Government can let me claim deductions on that next year

Got to drive the car for a few hrs. Saturday evening top down - and then the freezing rains hit DFW Sunday! Oh the joys of living in North Texas.

Looking forward to connecting with some of you in the next event......
