parts for oil change
 

Hi-

I own a 00 Boxster. What parts are needed for a oil/filter change. I will be purchasing the parts (Suncoast) and my mechanic will do the rest.

Suncoast's filter kit ($13.45) contains the; filter, rubber gasket and crush washers. I assume your mechanic has the filter wrench, if not they'll sell you that too!

Use Mobil 1 oil 0W40.

You will probably want to replace the oil plug's crush washer too.

At one time I knew the torque specs for the filter and oil plug, but owing to my advanced age and waist size I have terminal CRS. Can anyone help out?

Definitely want to replace the crush ring. The torque for the filter casing is 25nm. The drain plug is 37ftlbs. (those may actually be the same, but my mental conversion table is down at this time) :rolleyes:

You will also need 9 (nine!) quarts of synthetic Mobil 1 or other hiqh quality synthetic oil for the oil change. Oil arguments abound here, so check threads. Weights of oil is also hotly debated here so check those too. Porsche recommends 0W40 in all their cars now, but if you live down south where it's always hotter than hades, 10W40 would probably be as good and it's far easier to find.

Good advice, but a little clarification. You want a 40-Weight Synthetic Oil. The first number in a multi-viscosity Oil is simply indicative of it's Cold Flow characteristics (W stands for Winter, not Weight). It is NOT a blend of different Weight Oils as commonly thought.

And, there is no added protection from a 10W-40 vs a 5W-40. They are both the same weight Oil. The difference comes from the addition of Polymers which make the Oil behave (Flow) like it was a 10-Weight or 5-Weight Oil at 0°C. It simply means that in cold temps, the Oil will begin to flow sooner. Once the Engine warms up, or in Ambient Temperatures above 0°C, these characteristics are Moot. Hope this helps...

torque is 18ft-lb for the filter and 37ft-lb for the drain -- at least that's what i did at 700mi -- forget where i got them from, probably ppbb.

Sorry, I gave the differential plug for the 928 which is 17lb. Edited the first post to keep from confusing anyone.

I bought the Mobil one (Gold cap), had a filter with crush ring and gasket sent to me from the dealer...I took Lola down to the local lube station...got under the car with them and let them do the work. They charged 10 bucks.

This sounds like the best way to go. There's no clean up and you direct the man to do exactly what you want, thow him a 10 or a 20 and then you go off for a drive.

That is the way I do it.
