What RPM do you cruise around at?

The engine is willing across a broad band of RPMs. What range do you maintain in:

City/neighborhood driving

Freeway driving?

RedTele58 02-20-2014 03:32 AM

City - 4,000-5,000 rpm
Freeway - 3,000 - 4,000

Not sayin' you shouldn't solicit more opinions, but...take a look here:

I try and keep it between 10 and 11k

I'm more of a 3k-4k city
3k-4k freeway

bottom line, they don't like to be below 3k much...

whose face is that in the tach?

p.s.
Until the fluids are fully warmed up I keep it below 3K. Which seems to take a while if its city driving. Once everything is up to temp I never cruise below 3K.
I suspect a lot folks do the opposite to save gas and to go "easy" on the engine. wrong move.

kk2002s 02-20-2014 08:35 AM

I never looked hard enough before to see the face.
It's ether a character from Spinal Tap
Or
The driver who didn't let his car warm up and was Red Lining it all over the place

I'm same as most
During warm up just about touching 3k on shift. Mid 2k cruising for first few miles
After warm up 1st,2nd maybe 3rd touching 4k. If road allows then 5-6k shifts
Cruise right around 3K all roads

Crusing RPM?
RPM that corresponds to actual crusing speed. Minimum Rpm is your choise. Mine is1200.
Observe the Boxster engine is a fairly std engine, but flat.

Never cruising below 3000rpm. These engines like high rpms and their oil being splashed around by the crankshaft.

Get great MPG at 1200. That's like 25 mph in 4th
The only way I can get down to 1200 and still be moving is hwy heavy traffic.1st gear just trying to creap along at 3-5 mph

If you're cruising your 986 at 1200 rpm then you better keep Jake's number in your rolodex. You're going to need it.

The auto when in auto mode drops into 5th right above 40... Most the roads I drive on have 35 or 40 limits. So I drive around 50.. This puts the car frequently under 2k rpm... Now I usually drive in Man, but I wouldn't assume porsche would litterly program their cars to self destruct haha. Now I have a dual row and oil filter is always clear of shavings... But I don't think the cars HAVE to be kept over 3k.

kk2002s 02-21-2014 12:26 PM

In a previous thread you mentioned RPMs and I thought that the Tip was running at much lower RPMs then most think is best. I thought the same thing regarding Porsche and their auto programming relative to RPM ranges
I personally think that running under or around 2K, except brief periods, puts to much stress on the clutch. I can't speak to what affects or loads it puts on the IMS.

What I do know is that Highway cruising at 75 speedo (71-72 real) in 6th is right around 3k(-)
65 in 6th puts it down around 2500(+). The car is bogged down at this range

BIGJake111 02-21-2014 01:01 PM

if i remember right, i think i read somewhere that auto failures are rarer.. which i dont like bogging out the engine and i usually drive in M..... however i dont think its necessary to always be driving in higher revs and maybe based on the autos failing less its better that you dont.

Perfectlap 02-21-2014 01:28 PM

Higher revs (4-6K) not always necessary but unlikely to damage the engine.
Whereas lugging the engine will.

lol !!!!!!!!!!!!

steved0x 02-21-2014 05:50 PM

I drive at 5,000 rpm around town so I can hammer it if anyone gets beside me.

Jk :)

rick3000 02-21-2014 07:48 PM

I normally cruise between 3-4k, closer to 3k around town, and closer to 4k on the freeway. I try to avoid cruising below 2500RPM or above 5k for extended periods of time. 6500RPM is always fun when I get an on-ramp to myself.

Rolodex, lol- could you imagine physically writing down a phone number on a little car and keeping it with a bunch of other little cards.. That'd be like getting in the car and driving to a travel agency to purchase a plane ticket. :)
