Who all of y'all (besides me) has never driven a 911?

The first Porsche I owned was a 1967 911 in 1982. Jeez I wish I still had that car!
Along w/ my Boxsters, I have a '99 996, black w/ Boxster Red interior and full factory Aero kit. It runs like a scalded ape, but it's just a big Boxster. No 911 snobbery here! :D |
As a 16 year I detailed cars and got to plum job of detailing a 1986 930. I had to move the car about a mile. It's a mile drive that is seared into memory. :eek:

I'm just entering that world with my work-in-progress 993. Wow does it have a lot more torque than my 2.5l Boxster!

I assume that any one of us here could stroll into the nearest Porsche dealer and legitimately say "I'm thinking of trading in the Boxster. Let me try a 911 to see if I like it, will you?"

I test drove a '05 997 Carrera and was so disappointed. It was a Tip and felt like a 'normal' car to me. My Boxster sat lower, rode more firmly and felt more 'Porsche- like'. I loved the alcantara roof lining though and when I drove over some train tracks I could feel the added strength of the roof rails.

I've never had the chance, though a G series 911 is my ultimate dream car. I never really cared too much for Porsches until I got my Boxster, then I saw why P-cars were so special.

I've only been a passenger, and that being in an 86(?) 911 turbo. I'd love to own a 964 or 993 coupe one day, but that would be an addition to the Boxster, not a replacement. I think I'll always need a roadster.
I don't feel horsepower challenged, as I'd driven many 3.2's and 2.7's before deciding on the 03 base. The pull to ~65mph in 2nd gear is more than enough for me. Perhaps if I lived in a less congested area or got more track time I'd change my mind, but for now it's more than enough. |

I've driven hubby's 911. If the clutch wasn't so hard to depress, I'd still be driving it.

I acquired my driver's license back in 1972...shortly thereafter, my older brother purchased a 1969 911S 2.0 liter with mechanical fuel injection. The first time he let me drive, I was instantly hooked and intoxicated with the sound. When I could afford, I started small with a '74 914 2.0, then went on to various 944 series and finally an '83 911sc. Since then, I've owned numerous 911 variants...'80s Carreras, '88 turbo, '93 RSA and so on.
Being a track instructor, I've likely driven just about every model of Porsche out there, including twin turbos and GT3s. Still love the feel of the early, lightweight long hood 911s over the newer models, though. Pretty scary how fast the 3.8 and 4.0 liter 911s are these days. |
I've driven a couple of them. A 2000 base 911 Cabriolet in Germany (that was fun) and a 2006 C4S here in Houston, which just pissed me off the second I put my foot into the accelerator...
My 2.5 boxster seemed so wimpy after that. Best cure for feeling "horsepower challenged" is to take your boxster to a high speed DE event. Then you, like me, will quickly discover you have plenty of horsepower and not nearly enough driving experience to use what little we have in our cars. Lord willing, I will be trading up to a CPO 991S in 3-4 years and then we won't have that pesky lack of HP any longer :) |
I find the Boxster a joy to drive and while I own a couple of 911's I don't drive them and then feel like there is something missing from the Boxster. Each car is of a time and a type and if exceptional can be appreciated for its' own merits.

I for one am not a big 911 fan, and yes, I could afford one if I want one.
Used, anyways. :) I did come close to buying a used GT2, but opted for something else. |
