Shift Points

Being that the only things I've shifted in a while are a Harley & a 20 year old Jeep I was just wondering where (in the RPM range) are Boxster drivers driving.

I'm not talking about banging it up the redline I'm talking about for comfortable highway driving.

Thanks

PS: It will be an un modded 2003 S.

Your power peak is at about 4,500 RPM.

Hi,

Shift Points are largely a matter of circumstance - different for the conditions you're in. For normal cruising, shifting at about 2500-3000 is a good place to start...

2500-3000 is really too low unless you just started your car and temp is not over 180 yet.

When engine is fully warmed up, I always shift at 4000 rpm. The needle is right in the middle, so it's an easy benchmark. This is for "cruising" style shifting. For more spirited driving (my normal driving style), I shift at 4500 rpm to 5000 rpm. I shift above 5000 rpm when I need to merge into freeway and for really spirited driving.

I short shift more often then not. In the long run my engine will thank me.

Couldn't agree with you more Yellowbox. Surprisingly enough I've found shifting in the geriatric range (2000-3000) yields horrendous mileage as well.
