Autocross a Tiptronic Boxster S
Am thinking about taking my 2000 S to an autocross. Anyone have any tips on manually shifting a Tiptronic (thumb toggles on the steering wheel) while navigating an autocross course?

I was thinking the same as I have a box with one too. Then again shifting while in a turn is not a good idea.

I did one AX and stayed mostly in second gear... so my poor experience I don't think Tiptronic is an issue.

If you are just learning to autoX, Tip is a blessing as it's 1 less distraction to deal with.
Just down shift to 1st at the starting line & let the Tip do the rest, while you focus on the course, steering & braking. |

No problem, I have both a boxster S and a 996 C4 tiptronic that I autocross and on most courses both stay in 2nd gear all the way thru

I just did my first autocross yesterday and stayed in 2nd gear the whole time; there was one very tight turn where I could have possibly downshifted to first but I still had plenty of torque leaving it in second.

If you really like it ( autocrossing) you can begin incorporating left- foot braking and save a tenth or two as well as help settle the front end when desired...

Doesn't the Trip work the same as the PDK?
I don't even mess with my PDK when I autocross. I just make sure to give it a good stomp when I start out, that kicks it into the sportier mode and keeps it there. I have never lacked for power with the PDK, I've never thought "Gee, wish it was down a couple of gears, I'd have gotten more umph." PDK takes care of the whole thing. |
Yes they do, but the PDK is much faster than a Tip. I think the Tip was 1st available in 1997 & the PDK was 08 or 09? Kinda like Windows 95 & whatever the latest & greatest is now.
