Both windows randomly rolling down

I've tried search and have not come across this specific issue. Over the last few weeks, both windows will randomly roll down while driving. I have not done any recent work around the top or doors.

Each window will go down a bit and then repeat until they are all the way down. Typically I will roll them up and this will repeat a few more times. Then, for days the issue will not repeat. I have tried the window reset, e.g. hold window down for 5 seconds.

The only thing I have come across that would account for both window going down, all the way down, is the feature when you turn the key and hold it that automatically rolls the windows down.

Has anyone encountered this or have any insight? If it is related to the key feature does anyone know "how that works" toward being able to troubleshoot the related components.

As always, thanks!!! Without the expertise of this site, these would be impossible cars to own. I try to keep my sense of humor, but it is a bit startling when you are driving along at 80 mph and both windows start to creep down.

Sounds like your ignition switch is going. That can cause all kinds of odd electrical problems, like your windows randomly going down. It is relatively simple and inexpensive to replace, so I would start there.

+1 for ignition switch. Easier to just replace that to figure out how come it makes such weird stuff happen!

After learning that my '97 has the newer ignition, I obtained and replaced the electrical portion and the problem is still there.

Baring any ideas I plan to start looking into the systems (by design) that roll the windows down completely, the power window switches and the door lock (e.g. turn and hold to roll windows down).

I started by unplugging the power window switch to only the right window. The idea is to see is the problem re-occurs and if so to both windows.

At this point I'm shooting in the dark, any ideas appreciated.

The microswitch for the roof latch or the roof relay would be my guess.

I had thought about the roof latch microswitch but ruled it out since I am not getting a light and my understanding is that would result in the windows doing down just enough to clear the door fame…as opposed to al the way down. Please let me if that logic is incorrect, that would be an easy fix….thanks!
