I saw a post for a "cheap" LSD, was wondering what applications it had for street use. Any insight?

I used a good bit of LSD in college and would not recommend using it while on the highway.

Is your price for the complete trans or just the diff? Putting an LSD into the trans is a bit if work... The axle stubs have to be cut down in order to fit.
And to answer your question, the LSD is beneficial in traction challenged situations, such as snow. With both wheels getting power, there's less chance for getting stuck.

I would think for everyday use in the snow it would not be so good? Just remembering when I had a LSD in a truck in the snow. A simple corner especially with a trailer was a handful.

Maybe if I had the proper snow tires at the time :confused:

Given the power to weight ratio of a Boxster, I believe LSD would introduce some pretty squirrelly behavior on any curve with the least bit of slippery surface.

This is only true on the 6 speed, not on the 5 speed.

IMO, an LSD in a dedicated street car that doesn't see track time is a waste of time. Especially on a base model that doesn't make a whole lot of horsepower.

I agree, the only time I have inside tire wheelspin issues is some 2nd gear right hand turns, and only for an instant. It wasn't even a problem in an autocross, though that may depend on the course layout.

Well, theres a $650 LSD for sale on the classified section that I was interested in. The car is mostly for street use but I will want to take it on the track a few times.

The LSD would make the car "drift" more easily right?

It seems like the LSD was made for the 2.7 5 speed which I have anyways.

LSD will allow the car to over-steer easier however depending on how it locks, unlocks, and what tires you have, it can also have a effect of pushing initially in some turns

Since you are talking about the LSD I have for sale I will add to the discussion. This diff will not lock as hard as say a GT or other clutch type diff. I was going to use it on my ITR car and was setting the car up to not use a big rear bar. I wanted just a little insurance that I was not going to have any wheel spin and to help when I was curb hopping. I have used this diff many times in FWD race cars with good luck. It is a good low cost solution for an LSD for these cars.

It would be better if someone with the same design LSD chime in to say whether this style does that or not.

I am just wondering about streetability and practicality of your LSD on the street. I know you don't need a LSD for the street, but I'm putting in a performance clutch, flywheel and doing the IMS job so I thought while the transmission is out I might as well put in a LSD. I assume that the LSD will not be worn out during normal street use.

My other question is, what kind of differential is in the stock 986? I keep getting information about transmission oil changes when I search for it.
