Plasti Dip Weekend

Hey guys,

I have been curious what black wheels would look like on my car in person. Took the plunge on Plasti Dip this weekend. Took a long time, but very cheap! I like how the wheels turned out.
Not perfect, but went pretty well for a DIY job. For the wheels, I did 5 coats of Matte Black, and 3 coats of the Glossifer. I did the rear emblem as well.
I am going to see if I like the look long term, I may powder coat black, or get larger wheels eventually. Let me know what you think!

Not typically a fan of black wheels but that looks naughty!

Good look.

Naughty and nice. :)

Nice contrast to the car. How difficult was it to get the Plastidip off the trunk lid?

bmarti13 12-22-2013 05:53 PM

Thx for the comments guys. Removing plasti dip from trunk was super easy. As long as you apply a few coats it is very easy to remove in large sections. I had to use a toothpick to get in the middle of the E and B in Boxster to get the peel started, then it came right out.

Welcome to the Black Wheel Club! The look is fantastic. I will be powder-coating mine in the spring. I like the black emblem also, mine is black, but I never thought of Plasti-Dip for that.

Looking good. I'm going to have to try this plasti-dip thing.

Looks great! Glad to have another member of the Black Wheels club.

Do you have spacers on there?

tsunamiboy 12-23-2013 06:36 AM

I like it! I did my wheels in graphite.

newob 12-23-2013 06:43 AM

Interesting! Didn't know you could do that, now I'm contemplating it for mine... How were the materials all together? Did you have any experience doing this? Could you reverse it if you wanted?

bmarti13 12-23-2013 07:56 AM

This was my first time doing this. Very few materials needed. I watched tons of YouTube videos on it first. All of the plasti dip is completely removable. In fact, the first wheel I did started to peel, so I had to remove and start over. It was right where the tire meets the wheel. Not sure if it wasn't clean, or not fully dry when I applied coating.

Some other great colors out there as well. Anthracite grey looks great, but not sure it would look good with my paint color.

No spacers on my wheels.

I messed up on one of mine too, just peeled it off and started over. Dipyourcar.com for the materials.

Never been a fan of the black wheels. They remind me of black Reebok sneakers worn by high school bathroom smokers of the 80s. Nonethelss; nice job!

That looks GREAT!!!!

Love the black wheels. Need to do that on my Cayman. Great job!

You mean BK Knights? Or Vans?

Oh, right turn, Clyde! Scrap the Caddy!

heliguy 12-24-2013 04:14 AM

In the 80's I thought all the smokers wore GASS shoes.

I would say not " all smokers " had feet in the 80's. ;)
I'm pretty sure the shoe of choice was the Reebok mid-high top.

I just love the look of aluminum over black paint. Has anyone here painted their engine block black?
