Purchasing a car in another state from a private party
 

How do I go about purchasing a car in another state from a private party. I assume when they sign over their title to me, the ownership of the vehicle has passed. Should I get a lawyer to draft a purchase agreement where the seller upon signing forfeits any claim in the vehicle. This would only work if there is no bank lien, if there is I assume I need to pay the bank. What do I need to do with the dmv to drive it home? Insurance I have covered. I think I found a super clean 996 TT it just doesn't have many options.

Each State of the Union has its own criteria for registering a vehicle purchased outside of their State. At minimum, a signed Title and Bill of Sale would be required.

I suggest you contact your State's DMV for the proper procedure, or search their website.

In Texas, it's very cut-and-dried, but I know that up North where I was raised, it's quite different.

It actually appears complicated. I'm considering buying a car from someone in Minneapolis and there is a lien on the car. I would pay it off, but I guess I need to wait for the bank to then send me the title. It's much much easier if the have the title free and clear, you just go to the dmv and they take care of you there.

When buying my car I had a notary sign a bill of sale. That and the pink slip gets filled out. You can go to the DMV and get temp tags for the back of the car valid for like 3-4 days to help bridge the time.
