ims once again

Hi
I was just wondering if it is possible just to swap just the plain bearing when checking the IMS.

My Boxster is an 1997 and should have a single row 6204 2RS bearing, is this correct?
Why not just install a quality SKF bearing of the same type?

Nope, your car will be dual-row.

Received wisdom (partly due to recent revelations from Porsche) is that the dual-row bearing is pretty reliable.

Ok, nsk 6402 dua 17. Impossible to find

Is this solution any good? Itīs easy enough to knock out some spacers.
Do they use some kind of special 6402 bearing in this kit?

I don't think so. You are replacing the double row bearing, which according to Porsche data given in a recent law suit, has a failure rate of less than 1%, to a single row which has a failure rate of 8+ percent. Just get the LN dual row replacement. Expensive, but proven.

I believe the bearing designation for the double is 5204, but "double" check that as I've only sourced a single 6204.

Be sure to check out the many threads on replacing the bearing. You have to lock the engine at TDC and check to make sure the timing is correct. Messing this up and starting the engine can result in catastrophic engine damage.

1 data point for you: I changed out my dual row Ims on my 1997 box with 100,000 miles and the bearing was full of oil but in perfect shape.
