981 emblem on my 986

It took about 3 hours of measuring to get the arc right. What do you all think?

Sorry for all the pics, I took about 100, I couldn't decide which ones to post :D

I actually really like it. I've read where some say "if you don't know what it is, don't need to tell them" with putting porsche on the back, but i think it is a nice touch. Great picts of the process as well!

Not a big fan of the "porsche" or 986 sticker on the back of the wing...

looks nice

I assume since you DIY that there is no template to go off? Someone should make one and sell it on here.

How do you strip off the old lettering?

Perfectlap 11-23-2013 09:59 AM

This would be great if you had a 3D printer. Just make the template public. There's a website culture for that making everything from lamps to err semi-auto guns.

That's really well done. I like it a lot.
I'll slide by and we can do mine. I'll bring the beer (for after):D

Nice work! Great to see that you got the arc right :)
It's a PITA ;)

I didn't have a template no. I wish.. The problem is the trunk lid is convex so if you placed the letters in a perfectly straight line, and looked at them directly from the a few feet back, they look arched upwards like a rainbow. So, I had to place them at a slight downward arc, so that they actually looked straight from a few feet back. Major PITA, shoulda busted out the hummus! I could probably make a paper template if anyone needed one

Totally, always down to help a fellow Boxsterer

Since you put in most of the work already go ahead and offer a template to your fellow 986er for a few bucks.

Kenny Boxster 11-23-2013 09:01 PM

Wow, now that takes dedication!

markskyline 11-24-2013 12:03 AM

I ordered a set of 981 emblems. I'd be down to pay a few bucks for a template.

PM me if you're interested.

Thanks!

What is best way to get old emblem off with out leaving marks? I am really liking this mod

trimer 11-24-2013 06:17 AM

If you took that blue tape and went back out to your car, taped off all around the letters etc all the way to each edge and down to the edge of trunk, pulled that off, stick it on stiff type of construction board, traced and cut, you could have the perfect template to sell. I'd buy one!

Look in your medicine cabinet and garage...

Dental floss saws emblems off realy nicely, and WD40 removes adhesive residue with no ill effects to the paintwork.

I'd be in for a template too...

jcb986 11-24-2013 06:38 AM

I also like the look. I might just create the template. I would need to get a good image of all the letters, retrace them in Illustrator for an outline. This way you can have different templates with different spacing's.

particlewave 11-24-2013 07:17 AM

A picture is a template, boys and girls. ;)

Chuck W. 11-24-2013 07:33 AM

GREAT job.

Yes it is, but, having a template that you can cut out on the dotted line, insert your letter, then line up on your trunk, of course, then peel and seal. About a 30 minute job with no guess work and who knows, maybe use one with tighter letter spacing for a different look.

particlewave 11-24-2013 11:48 AM

I was thinking a top down pic just printed out to scale. Might take a few minutes, but waiting for a template in the mail would take days.

Either way, great work! ;)
