Cut open an oil filter, should this worry me? (pics attached)
1999 Boxster with 94k, during an oil change today we cut open the oil filter and found a couple small metal shavings, but nothing too large or excessive. I had a pre-purchase inspection done at 92k and the specialist cut a filter open and told me it looked fine, but didn't mention what he found inside.
My question is.. how much flakes/debris is normal in a dissection? Here are a couple pictures of my filter.. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1384561436.jpghttp://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1384561831.jpg |
Nothing there to get worried about.
A couple of small glittery bits are no cause of concern. All engines will shed a bit of metal over time, it's just something that you can't easily see with a metal bodied oil filter like most cars use. |
Sleep well. Nothing to worry about. A couple of little flakes/sparklies is normal.

I used to freak out when I would discover extremely fine particles on my magnetic drain plug. My filter would be completely free of metal particles.
My indie told me not to worry.............. TO |
