Track rims on a budget? For a 2.5L most top track hounds run stock OEM takeoffs ($400/full set) and 225/255 tires. It is plenty of rubber for track use and really keeps costs under control. See Boxster Spec Racing for more info.

If you drop in a 3.6L with 325hp you can make good use of more tire and a set of 8&9x17 will make 245/275 possible.

Tires are a tradeoff between lateral grip, rolling resistance, rotational weight, and aero resistance. Choose the best combo for the tracks you plan to run. A 30 sec AX course will benefit from extra wide tires while running on a super-speedway roval will benefit from less tire. I recommend choosing the tire you want to run first and then pick wheels that will fit instead of the other way around. Controlling your contact patch is the first priority.

Sometimes I think of tracking my Box but I quickly talk myself out of it!

Topless - how much do you budget for tracking the car and setting it up ?

Let's see - dedicated rims and tires
- brake pads
- special oil sump to provide lubrication on high g turns
- roll bars/cage
- crash helmet
etc etc

And a few cases of beer for after the race to keep the track/support crew happy!

Yes it is quite a lot of fun and has been described as being the most fun you can have in a Porsche with your clothes on. Most PCA regions will let you safely run a DE track day in your bone stock car to see if this game is for you. If you do it often, track brake pads, roll bar, race seats and harnesses, and other safety gear are recommended. An extra set of wheels/tires are only needed for complete track junkies like me. Since I am both the driver and the track support crew, beer expenses are minimal.

I have a pretty well sorted street/track car now with about $8k in performance, safety, and reliability mods. Most don't go to this extent though but it developed slowly over 7 years of performance driving and nearly 100 track days. I do prefer track days to golfing.
