Some newer cars like my A6 have / can be setup for the LED brake lights to flash rapidly under "hard" braking situations. That is a great idea, as flashing light attract the eye much quicker than a solid brake light.

But with our cars, getting rear ended is a big concern. The big SUV behind might take an extra 80ft to stop from 70 mph than the Boxster.

If the SUV guy went to the same school Rick3000 went, everybody, including the super sticky tires, should all have a long and happy life!

Exactly, most ppl don't know their stopping distance. At 70mph dry vs wet, do you know your distance?

"In a straight line" I do know my emergency stopping range. But not when I have to start looking for the hazard switch while I'm skidding left & right trying to avoid hitting those with performance tires ;)

A great point! I always try to leave extra space in front of my car if I am being tailgated so that if I have to jam on the breaks it is less abrupt, and I can give the car behind me more time to react.

But I may be overly cautious about being rear ended, because I got hit two years ago (bike cut me off, I jammed on the brakes, and an F150 rammed the rear bumper). I ended up with some really bad neck issues from it.

Everyone should take a defensive driving class, and have their family take one as well. It really is worth the money, at the very least do a track day or autocross to get a feel for the limits of the car. What you can get out of even the cheapest, most boat-like cars would surprise you!

The best tyres you can afford are what you should buy. Tyres affect handing, general traction, ride and stopping distance. Poor quality cheap tyres are dangerous and at least as bad as good quality worn tyres.

I think running winter tires is a better improvement in safety for the buck than getting expensive all season tires (jack of trades master of none). And they make your expensive set of summer tires last a heck of a lot longer. A second set of wheels is more convenient and adds cost, but it's a much better investment than go fast (marginally) parts, a stereo, Ipad in the center console, and a bunch of other stuff

I wish more motorists would pay attention to the road while they were driving. I was rear ended by a SUV a few years ago that slammed me into the car in front of me (another SUV). When I approached her window to see if everyone was alright she proceeded to tell me about how her kids were acting up in the back and how stressful her life has been. She literally wasn't even looking at the road until it was far too late to see that ALL traffic had stopped, not just my lane (three lanes our direction)

Just watch the road ahead of you, maybe check your mirrors once in a while, use your signal lights...

...maybe stop installing HID bulbs in cheap reflector housings and blinding everyone...
