What is this?

Aha ! No picture!

Anyway, I was looking to reroute my front unlock cable to my tow plug and came across what looks like a temperature probe on the underneath the passenger side front grill on my 03 non S model. Only thing is - I don't have an outside temperature display in the car. I normally just put my hand outside and check it manually. If it isn't a temperature probe - what is it?

physical description: pointy on the front end. Wire coming out of the back end.

Hopefully, this won't turn into a 5 page thread.

thanks fellow Pcar drivers.

does sound like it has sand inside?

Rectal probe...used only when you rear end someone.

Temp probe. You can access the outside temp function once you have activated your instrument clusters on board computer.

I've always wondered what that was and keep forgetting to post a thread about it :)

Huh? So all I have to do is go to my Porsche dealer and tell him to program my computer to read from this sensor? No more checking the temperature by opening the window and sticking my hand outside?

What else can he do for me? - besides $450 for an oil change.

You can activate it yourself if you have a Durametric tool. You can do the oil change for about $75 if you watch the Can-tire flyers and catch Castrol on sale.

I asked my local dealer to activate it for me before I got my Durametric. They pulled faces and made out like it would be some big deal, at least an hour of shop time, if they could even do it. "You're opening a big can of worms there" they told me. Seriously, they actually said that.

I got my Durametric tool and this was the first thing I did. Was easy to find the option in the menu and I had it done in seconds. The only glitch was that in activating this function it set my whole dashboard back to imperial. Although I was easily able to set the rest of dash back to metric using the twisty-knob, the outside temp display remains in Farenheit. I'm told that this is because my car is a US car and that the only way to get the outside temp to display in Celsius is to replace the dash with a Canadian one. Doesn't bother me as I am just as comfortable with either measurement style.

Rick

I can't stop giggling from reading that.
