JD - I sympathise with you.....

Many years ago when I was working in South Africa, I lived on a dirt road - about a mile from the tar. At the time I was (apart from my company car) running my pride and joy, a rather nice Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV and a Velocette MSS classic motorcycle. When we bought the house, the road really didn't register with me regarding the downside of driving the Alfa and Velo on dirt.....

But it wasn't long before reality struck - driving a classic car or bike on a dirt road is the pits - add in holes that can swallow your suspension in one go, gravel that ruins your paintwork / windscreen and the local 4WD idiots who are determined to overtake you no matter what.......
In the end, I really didn't want to take the car and bike out of the garage. It was just too much hassle and the driving pleasure was outweighed by the problems described....

So I can relate to your conundrum, tho' I don't have an answer.....

I wanted to sell my 986 not long ago and the rage of people who came to see it made me sick just to think of seeing it go. Had it all.... from punk looking teens to Porsche chicks just-wanna-showoff. 90% didn't know crap about neither Porsche or car in general.

I've considered selling a couple of times, but then I think about how I would feel watching it drive off with someone else behind the wheel, and that's the end of that. I just don't think i could bring myself to part with this car. Perhaps I will pass it on to my grandson when he gets his drivers license in about 15 years.

$20-$30K is nice, but I doubt you'll get the same utility/satisfaction with that money on the next car. Even if you spend a lot more, it will only be marginally better. In other words you'll simply be throwing away more money on top of the unavoidable depreciation you already experienced with the S. At the present market value it's at the possible position, upgrades have been completed, low mileage has elminated the major maintenance budgeting, no further plunking down of cash is need to pay it off or to get into something newer (not necesarrily better on 'dollar basis') and its still the car that sets the bar in its class. Personally I'd hold onto it until the 981S has fallen substantially.
Or if you want a car that's going to sit in your garage on any day but a sunny one, then I'd jump on a 964 , RS if you can swing it. The rarer the car the better it will do as its sits. The Porsches that came after are not quiet as sharp/tight like a 3.2 on PSS9's, and the cars that came before are antiques, which is fine but I'd rather be in at least the modern category.

When I'm looking at a house to buy I start in the garage & work my way out to the driveway & then surrounding streets for about a mile to see if I can get thru the maze without getting dirty on a daily basis. Speedbreakers are dealbreakers! :chicken:

If your car can only be shipped in manila tax free i would buy it for 40k USD. In here it would cost around 80k per my guestimate with our silly taxation.

I concur. Based on some past posts, I would hazard a guess that JD is considering a Ferrari purchase.

But then again, there's still that two miles of gravel road to contend with...........
