2nd gear grinding
 

For the past two days when I shift from first to second gear I get a little grind until I've gone through the gears a little. The car only has 28k miles. Am I really looking at a new transmission or is there a fix before too much damage is done?

common issue. fresh transmission fluid (oem or redline) can help 90% of the time.

the latter you can do yourself, the former requires pulling the transmission apart (at which point getting a replacement transmission becomes a cost-effective alternative).

The GBox detent helped my 2nd gear "crunch". Haven't had an occurrence since it went in...

I replaced my 5 speed tranny with a pre-owned one due to this after changing the tranny fluid twice.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to check with the shop that I plan on using. Since I'm going to have the IMSB replaced I think that I'll do the gbox at the same time.

Double cliuch, I had the same problem. My problem was totallly contaminated oil/ tanision grease. I changed the oil but the damage was done.

I had the same problem first the Grinding and then a broken gear tooth.
Result?
Brand new gear box.
Luckily I was able to find one on UK eBay real cheap $230 US.

I had problems with 2nd gear also (2002S 6sp) until I installed the Gbox detent. Installing it was a bit difficult working from under the car but it was worth it. Not a problem since.

It is a little unfair since I am a Porsche tech, but I rebuilt my 2000 S. I bought it with 2nd gear grinding from PO's attempt to be a race driver. The locker/dog teeth are VERY small, and get rounded off quite easily. The GBOX detent is a great upgrade. If can compensate for light wear on the dog teeth, but if they have started to chip then it will only be a band aid.

If no bearings are needed, and you can replace the 1st/2nd locker assy, get Bbox detent, and replace 2nd gear. Labor will only be a few hours more than used transaxle to repair, so if would come down to price of used unit vs. gear and locker.

If there is ANY suspect of bearing contamination, then labor to do pinion bearing will shoot up. Also the bearings are all quite expensive.
