Those German engine mechanics could not hold a gasket aligned and in place while bolting the covers. it kept falling off, so being brilliant as they are they used a sealant gasket instead. {Joking ... cause honestly I dont know}

That oil on top must get hot and smell bad, I would also suspect the cover seal as you do, but isn't the AOS Oil seperator plumbing near that area as well? I would suspect that as well as I have read that sometimes the connections don't seal well and it could leak.

Garage
The oil cooler with it's 4 'O' rings are in that left rear area of the engine. I just changed my 13 year old 'O' rings on the cooler when I replaced all the radiator hose rubber. The old 'O' rings were fairly flattened but I didn't have a leak.

2000 base manual trans.

Wow, that engine looks big outside of it's cage.

Make sure it's not PS fluid. The res. sits left front on top of the engine.

jaykay wins, Pentosin CHF (ps fluid) is blue.

I mopped up a bunch of it from the same place, before adding an RSS pulley for maintaining high revs on track.
Problem solved after changing pulley and sphinning the ps pump more slowly.
