Jungle Monkey Squeal??

I have a 1999 Boxster with 125000 miles.
Just bought it, with the squealing sound.
If I can I'd like to work on this issue myself.


I have this jungle monkey sound that starts as soon as I start the car and does not disappear warm or cold.
It seems to be coming from left rear side of the car.

I hear the sound when I am at idle/neutral.
I don't hear the sound when I am in gear and off gas pedal, decelerating.
I hear the sound increase in frequency as RPM goes up,
After 2500 rpm, I cannot hear the sound.
It may be disappearing but I suspect it's frequency is too high for my years. (is this possible?)

I checked the drive belt. Tried replacing it but the belt in place was new.
I took the belt out and started the car for a very brief moment but the sound was still there. So, I guess it isn't the belt.

Any inputs?

Since you didn't have any change when you took off the belt, I would check the spark plugs to see if they are tight. Is the noise continuous or cyclic? For example: eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek, or eck, eck,eck, eck, eck.....
There have been more than a few with a similar noise that turned out to be a loose spark plug.

Well, if you removed the drive belt then you removed the only possibilities that came to mind )i.e. (alternator, water pump, A/C, and assorted pulleys). This would be worrisome to me since the only other moving parts at an idle with the car parked would be the engine itself.

Hope someone else can provide some other insight.

you said idle/neutral... clutch in our out? could be the throwout bearing, and you hear it while accelerating as it has "spun up"

I've experienced a jungle monkey squeal in the past, but it wasn't automotive related. Sorry I couldn't help.

The air oil separator can make a squealing sound, mine did. Then it stopped squealing ad started smoking.

Clutch does not affect the sound.
In neutral, the car makes ek ek noise.
In gear 2300 rpm the ek ek becomes eeeeeeeek sound disappears
Then at 2500 to 3000 rpm the
In gear with foot off the pedal seems to stop the squeal.

The car runs and drives great with no problems. No smoke yet...

Well, after listening to your video, it sounds like you have two pieces of metal rubbing together. Like a lose muffler strap, heat shield, etc. Doesn't sound like an engine noise to me, but then again I'm still new to the P-cars.

Have you looked under the car to see if anything is rubbing where it shouldn't? Any new markings?

I tend to agree that it might be related to your exhaust assembly. Try having someone put some pressure on the exhaust tips and see if it isolates the sound.

I tell you what I think it might well be. A loose spark plug.

They can make a noise just like that.

Check / tighten any loose plugs. Bet it disappears after that.
