Top Belt Tensioner

When replacing the water pump Saturday, we noticed that the top belt tensioner / idler was a little noisey.

Didn't have one on hand, but, want to replace it...

When attempting to remove it, the bolt was sooo long that I couldn't get it out. (kept hitting the inner wall below the opening...

What 's the trick to getting the bolt out?

Thanks-

Pup

Persistence. That is what it took.

You were almost there if you got it that far out. It seems the sheet metal has to 'flex' a little for removal of that bolt. I had the same issue and almost did not complete the job as a result. Glad I stuck with it, I could have had a similar post though.

Good Luck!

hehe,

will try that...

Judging by the length of the bolt, we didn't want to risk the rear bump falling off when we pulled the bolt out!!

Did you get the new idler at the Dealer or did you pay a reasonable price ?

What about loosening your motor mount, place a jack under the engine for support and lower it slightly to get the bolt clear of the wall?

Reasonable priced. That's my motto. You have a couple choices:

1). Get a similar Audi/VW part. Cheapest and same quality. Radiator caps and washers and things can all be had here - for ALWAYS LESS, ALWAYS.
2). Ebay - although that is another can of worms….sometimes.
3). Pelican - for parts like this they are pretty reasonable.

It IS TIGHT in there. May have to use an open-end and still bend the metal behind the armrest a little but it SHOULD NOT permanently deform it.

Enjoy a quiet-sounding engine bay when you are done!

Thanks!

I looked on Pelican Parts, didn't see it... Doesn't mean it is not there....:)

How do you know which Audi or VW part will work?

The guys at the dealership aren't gonna now, with out a part # ?
