rattle from rear

Hi all

I'm getting a rattle nosie from the rear of my 2001 boxster S. I'm hoping someone could help diagnose it.

Its a mechanical rattle that appears when the car warms up and sits on idle. Its not exhaust related as the rattle will go away when the clutch is depressed. I tried to find it and it appears like its coming from the top rear of the gearbox.

Any ideas?

My guess, heat shield of catalic convertor thet is letting go.

My 97 had a muffler weld that had broken loose, and a quick stop to a muffler place for a spot weld did the trick. You may want to bring your boxster to a muffler place and have them inspect it. Cheap fix if something is not welded properly.

BTW, my spot weld was free. I asked the guy how much I need to pay and he looked at me and must have thought, "5 minutes work and no parts isn't worth the time to write up an invoice."

If you haven't already, open the engine compartment and see if you can hear it a little better. Our rattle came from the alternator bearings and it sounded like it was under the car until i opened the engine compartment.
