Strange Noise

I have noticed that at 1600-2000 rpms, in gear, moving in any gear, that I hear a howl, moan. It goes away after that rpm range. I have no idea where this may be coming from. It does not appear to be load dependant, but is rpm dependant..

2000 Boxster S 3.2

Any ideas?

Have you had the IMS bearing replaced? I read something about moaning at low revs can be advanced warning of an IMSB failure. There are probably other things it could be but this is the most worrying.

On a different note, I had a moan at high revs when I was having fun. Tracked it down to the passenger seat so now I no longer let the wife in.

Well done, that's the most effective way to neutralize the wide open throttle alarm.

low rpm moan - tell me more

IMS has not been replaced..

Tell me more.... about the low rpm moan issues?

Only occurs when driving "easy" like 1600-2000 rpm, pitch is constant, volume is constant, not loud , no grind, no change in tone/pitch/volume with rpm, just there or not there... Never heard on accelleration, mostly when driving low speed, 30-35 mph... Motor not lugging, no obvious issues. Just annoying and I'd like to make it go away.

Not sure where I read it but it stuck in my mind. Just remember it stating than in rare occasions a moaning at low revs preceeded an IMSB failure.

I dont know if anyone can shed any light or offer alternatives but thought I had better tell you.

Yes. Please chime in if you have any info.

PLease chime in if you know anything about this... I may have read something like that but was almost positive there was a vibration associated and that it occurred at start up . This does not. just in the range I stated.

When you said it engine speed and not load dependant it made me think of this.

Of course if Porsche had made a left and right hand head instead of a common one, we would never have heard of an IMS.
