Need A Hardtop Hoist
 

Is that what it's called? A hoist? Or a winch? Or what?

Hubby needs it for the 911 top, which is getting too heavy for me to help with. That thing gains about 10 lbs every year! ;)

We need one that can hold the hardtop for a couple of months a year, doesn't need to be electric.

Anybody know where I can order one? I've googled and they seem to be about $200, but I don't know which parts company is reliable.

Is that the Hubby or the top that gains 10lbs ???:o

Why not try settting up a couple of small pulleys from your garage roof...can only be a few dolars..... I set one up years ago for my windsurfing board at the time..made it easy just lowering onto the roof bars of the car..

Pete's on to something. Some rubber tubing over a rope and some pulleys will do exactly what the overpriced Porsche hardtop hoist does (or any hardtop hoist, for that matter).

I wouldn't buy a Porsche model though... to spendy. Any unit that looks sturdy will probably be just fine. And I bet if you look around, you'll find one used for a fraction of the cost of new.

A bike lift could also be modified to lift it. Something like this:

Yes a bike lift/hoist works well to remove the top.
You can also get a wall mount for the hardtop.

I use the bike lift to remove the hardtop and place it on the wall mount.
Easy enough to do it by your self.
I wouldn't want to keep it or store it on the lift for long periods of time tho.
You'd need a wall mount for storage.

I would like some help in uploading pictures. There is no Album & pictures option in the User Control Panel as the FAQ says. How do I do it?

I tried to upload a picture of mine in the "up" position, about where the top would be when lifted. Big foam pads engage the plastic surround above the windows and there is no contact between the hard points on the lift and the rubber window seals. (a good reason to avoid those commercial pipe type lifts.) The grey straps go from inside on the yoke, under the rear window and back to the copper pipe. This prevents the rear biased load from tipping backward out of the yoke. The yellow rope is for leveling the top after it's at full height.

I have less than $100 in this hoist including the winch. If you're not inclined to DIY, a clever woodworker could make the yoke (I have the detailed design) and a handyman could install the suspension.

Credit for this idea came from a person on Rennlist several years ago, but I have modified it a lot from 911 to Boxter.

Definitely that stupid top! :D I think it's some kind of bizarre molecular cohesion.
