Red or Silver? Help Me Decide

So I keep looking at the side vents on my '09, which are currently silver. I'm thinking of having them made red to match the rest of the car. Can this be done by a body shop? Can they just paint the ones I have? Or does it look wrong?
My inclination is to trust the Porsche designers, who made it silver, but the red is interesting as well.

What is your opinion?

I've retouched some before and after pics:

Red is my vote. Then the side scoops will match the treatment of the front ones. To me less is more when it comes to design

BYprodriver 03-04-2013 07:22 AM

Hard to say, may fall into the changing it just to be changing something category. I would like to see black vent & or red wheels while you are retouching.

particlewave 03-04-2013 07:26 AM

I like the silver...compliments the wheels ;)

Homeboy981 03-04-2013 07:36 AM

Hi @PorscheChick,

I tried to paint the side vents to match the main color of the car…silver. It just seemed to have a "washed out" effect. Went back to black with silver trim.

Your side intakes are larger so choose wisely. IMHO the silver blends the lights better.

But, wait a minute! Aren't you a girl? We SHOULD BE getting your opinion on color!

Barteur 03-04-2013 08:10 AM

Both are nice but I would go for the red one.

BruceH 03-04-2013 08:39 AM

I like the red.

NoGaBiker 03-04-2013 08:49 AM

Red all the way, Chick. To me the visual improvement in the 986.2 over the 986.1 is largely due to the body-colored (instead of black) side vents. Your car will likewise show improvement. I've seen it done many times and, just like your Pshopped version, it looks a lot better.

Cheers!

AKnowles 03-04-2013 08:55 AM

Red looks much better.

Johnny Danger 03-04-2013 09:21 AM

I would definitely get rid of the silver on the side intake vents. However, I would prefer to see them in "trim" black. Also, even though I'm a fan of black wheels, given the soft color of the interior, I'm not sure it would go well.

HAUSIDMT 03-04-2013 10:26 AM

I say go Red, and then Black on the wheels, somewhat of a red nod to the dangermobile. :)

Seriously though....

If you can get a good color match, definitely go red

M31 03-04-2013 11:16 AM

OK...I've been flipping back & forth on this so I emailed your pics to Heidi who is still in winter storage. She took one look and said "red, red, red" as long as it's a match...:D

That goes without saying !

Did the car come from the factory with them painted silver? If so and you decide to go red, purchase another pair and have those painted, just in case you wanted to put the car back in original factory condition. I like the silver myself.

doragman 03-04-2013 03:44 PM

Red ....never did like the contrasting color for that particular part

copsahl 03-04-2013 04:22 PM

Red...or matte black

This is completely true. I will consult a few women, whose answers will be weighted at least 4x that of any 1 man.

But I thought I'd give you guys a chance, just for hoots. ;)

Yes, the 2009's have these silver vents.

Marburk 03-04-2013 06:59 PM

I like the red or black option better than the silver. Have you considered painting your brake calipers at the same time? Red calipers would give you a triple red effect and it might add another layer of cool! Just a thought.........

Skrapmot 03-04-2013 07:18 PM

Red. I don't like the contrast of the silver and red.

Wret 03-05-2013 03:40 AM

Red. And +1 for doing the calipers too. ;)

rp17 03-05-2013 07:21 AM

The silver makes the vents stand out. The red makes it blend. I would really like to see how it looks in black.

super66 03-05-2013 08:47 PM

I'd paint them red and I would get the Cayman vents, thats what I did with mine and never looked back.

Bumperplugs has the exact match I believe and they turned out great for me and others. I'm not sure he's still around, I assume so lol

Idaho Red Rocket 3 03-05-2013 09:18 PM

It looks good both ways. I have a red / tan 2k S. On the red gen II cars I prefer silver vents and silver wheels.

986_c6 03-08-2013 12:28 AM

I would go dark gray or black side vents.

PorscheChick:

Order your painted side vents from Eric at BumperPlugs. The quality and service are excellent. Mine were done by him and my delivering dealership way back in 2006 prior to me even taking delivery of my custom ordered car.

You order them, he ships them to you, you put the new ones in, and ship your unpainted ones back to complete the core exchange.

I love the mono-tone look.

If you want something realy unique, they can do the Cayman style vent too. It's a little more involved. Check out his web site.

I am ALWAYS happy to plug BumperPlugs here (pun intended) for many reasons (high quality and great service) but, mainly because many years ago he generousley donated door prizes for our Tail Of The Dragon 986 Forum trip back in 2007 (Randall, NickCats, Derb....and others were there!).

kashmir 03-09-2013 04:52 AM

I would do Red, here is my, Y-Go-W with black, I think I need to change it back.

So, I've decided:

I tallied up all the men's votes (which have a value of .0001 point each) and the votes of a couple of women I know (5 points each) and the votes say to keep it as is.

This point system is why your wife wears the blue dress when you said you liked the green one. Sorry, that's the rules. :D

Seriously, I think I will keep it as is for now, it's kinda different and quirky. I think it's only on 987 Boxsters and disappeared with the 2013's. Silver will stay for a while longer.
