RMS installation tool

Would anyone be willing to lend/rent to me the rear main seal install tool for a 2.7 base boxster engine.

Thx in advance

Hi Richard, check out my post entry #22 search "started my ims upgrade 2000 s wit 107,000 miles

Takes 5 minutes to make a perfect tool and you can adjust the depth a little if you have any issues on the surfaces. 13mm was the correct depth from the crankshaft face.

The Porsche special tool was big bucks and I couldn't find anyone other then shops that had it.

Before you go to all that bother, go to Lowers/Home Depot and buy a 4” OD CPVC pipe union (it has a small ridge half way down the inside where the CPVC pipes would butt), costs about $4.

Using your old flywheel bolts, finger tighten four in a cross pattern against the new seal (the bolt heads will rest on the ridge inside the pipe union), then using a socket (fingers only, no wrench), tighten the four bolts in a crosswise pattern until the installed depth is reached all the way around the circumference of the seal. Remove your $4 tool and admire your handy work……………

Thx I will give it a shot.

Do you guys know how much to torque the IMS bolt to the bearing shaft.

JFP in PA 02-18-2013 02:31 PM

Who's IMS bearing (OEM, LN or Pelican)?

Ckrikos 02-18-2013 08:07 PM

The LN, I just realized this is an rms thread and not an IMS. Anyway, I want to ask my ln imsb installers to see if they get it right.

7.5 ft. lb Here are the full instructions set : http://www.lnengineering.com/imsretrofit.pdf

Has any one run across the center ims bearing bolt torque for the LNE retrofit.
Wayne says not to exceed 24 ft lbs while the LNE instructions say not to exceed 16 ft lbs. He does not make a destinction between the Pelican and the LNE for the torque values. This has me a little concerned because I went with the higher torque.

See the post just above yours............................

Richard Bruce 02-19-2013 05:46 PM

Just wondering why Wayne didn't differentiate in his instructions.

Richard Bruce 02-19-2013 08:00 PM

I was working off instructions from an LNE retrofit kit that indicated the center bolt should not be any tighter than 24 ft lbs this off a sheet dated 10April11, The latest sheet which JFP in PA gave the link to was only 18 ft lbs. This is why I posted the question.

Wayne uses a different assembly, so the specs can be different.

We have had the chance to check the installed depth and alignment of several done with the $4 CPVC pipe, all were just fine..............

I finished the Ims/Rms upgrade project today. I wanted to thank the many very knowledgeable
folks that answered my questions along the way. This is a great forum.
Thanks to all.
