Wheel Bearing

Holy smoke, my indy just informed me that my right front wheel bearing was shot. I took it in because of the whining noise and I thought it might be that. I have 92K on my 2000 Boxster 2.7. Anyone ever lost a wheel bearing at less that 100K? I do most of my own maintenance but don't have shop presses and that sort of thing so I had to take it in. $477 to repair. I thought that was quite reasonable. What do you think?

Yes, on these cars there are plenty of examples of wheel bearings that go WELL in advance of 100K miles. In my case, I had a front one go at maybe 45K miles (IIRC).

And yes, that's a good price in my opinion. Our local dealership (not that I much use them for repair jobs since my warranty ran out!) quoted me ~$1K.

front bearing is a breeze compared to the rear . no under tray , exhaust , drive shaft and e-brake removal . should less $$$$

I have a rear wheel bearing out... at 21,000 miles!

Mine went out on the passenger side at 75,000. I believe my brother changed the other rear before then as well as Axle assembly.

Typical.

I changed both rears & the rear axle at around 45K miles.

It is what it is.

Funny, my wife's Jetta did the same thing - just chase the failed wheel bearings around the car. Porsche needs a better design. Or supplier.

Had to change my left rear in '11. The right rear failed last summer ($1,002 - it took out the hub too), now my left front is making funny noises.
