You Break It, You Buy It

Ever wonder who pays if a classic car is damaged during a road test by a journalist? Now we know.

Auto Journalist Sued For $174,000 After Destroying A Rare Porsche's Engine

One would think that a journalist that test drives cars would be insured for such a mishap... although over-rev'ing the engine by 1200 RPM's is a bit of a screwup, especially if he was told 7K was the limit... I'm glad it wasnt my car :D

Oh I could tell some stories!

Most relevant is during the international press launch drive for the Carrera GT, 2 journalists managed to exceed 10,000 rpms which "blew" their engines!

Why is it that some drivers treat that red spot on the tach as a waste of paint?
I've always believed it was there for a reason.
Popped out of gear? Sure...
Maybe dyslexic; can't tell the difference between 6000 and 9000.

Missed a shift and got into the lower gear do you think? Happened to me in 1965 in a racing Alfa and I saw 1500 over redline easy. I was lucky there was no damage and I drove it for 20 more months until the engine blew.

Moral of the story; never loan out your car!

Hubby loaned his last Carrera to someone and they bottomed it out when coming up the little slope at the bottom of the driveway.

Then there's the valet who put 80+ miles on it when we were eating dinner. It never did shift right after that.

I hit the wrong gear in a downshift in the Boxster once. Im blanking on the exact RPM, but the ECU shows a few revs in Stage 5 (out of 6). I think it was close to 9,000 RPM.

That was in 2009 and about 35-40K miles ago.

9,000 rpm should be enough to stretch the rod bolts!

RandallNeighbour & Chief: Wow, I didn't even put that together, yes it probably was exactly like that scene from Ferris Bueller. We always self-park now, no need to impress anyone when your synchromesh is on the line.
