Loorking at a newer Boxster
 

I have been looking for a newer Boxster S what years would be recommended could afford up to about a 2008.

Wait another year and get 2009... no IMS.

Another vote for an '09 or newer.

+1; more power/ no IMS.

I have been pricing cars for about the last 2 months I would like to move up to a S model and could afford up to about a 2008 based on car prices in a 250 Mile radius of my home. Does any one have any advice on the boxster S or cayman S form 2006 to 2008 I do know the 06 Cayman had a 3.4 and the 08 boxster has the 3.4 but I'm not familiar with mechanical issue in those years of cars.

As far as buying a 2009 this is out of the question by as much as $10,000 an 06 in this area are starting at $27,500 and 08 are starting at $33,000. 2009 start in the $40000 range No can do.

Heres a reality check. Put everything obvious back to stock including mufler took 2 evenings in all. Best trade in offer was $10,000 lowest $6500. I'm almost sick.:barf:

You have a nicely equipped Boxster. I would keep it until you can afford what you want. Sorry for the trade in offers. Cars are rarely investments and usually depreciate at a shocking rate. I paid $65,000 for my Boxster new in 2001. That's a $50,000+ hit. Fortunately, I have no plans to sell it so I haven't lost a penny. :D

I hear you loud and clear. My 2002 BMW X5 was $55,000 brand new and it was worth $11,000 in 2010 when I sold it. My wife's 2002 BMW 325i was $38K new and now is worth about $6K or equal to the price of a 2007 Toyota Yaris. After those experiences, I bought my Boxster used for $10K and let someone else take the depreciation hit. I'll never buy a new luxury car again. Sure, I might never be able to own a car that sold in limited numbers or a classic model like a 993 Turbo but those 996 prices are dropping like snow at a ski resort.

Other than Porsche's infamous waterpump, there really aren't many mechanical issues with the range of years you're looking at. Early Caymans can have "trunk clunk", but that's fixable. You are correct, 08 Boxster S's got the 295 HP Cayman engine. My Boxster had the wp go out at 26K but it was covered by warranty. My 07 CS hasn't had a mechanical issue since I've owned it (almost 2 yrs). Both are very dependable cars. Couldn't say that about the 01 Boxster S that I had prior.

If you're trying to trade your Box right now in a cold weather climate, don't expect top dollar. But the Boxster or Cayman you're looking at should also have the winter discount. It's never a complete wash as the dealer always has the advantage. But they should be willing to dance as there are fewer customers wanting a mid-$30s car vs a $10K car. They'll give you a lowball bid right off the bat but should be willing to deal if they find you're a serious buyer.
