confusion re. ims replace 986 vs 987

I have called 3 independent shops and they all claim the technique for replacing the ims on 986 and 987 engines are the same-same costs. this seems to run counter to forum opinions that have 987 repairs much more expensive than 986. whats up?

You would do well to spend a little time on Jake Raby's web site (Google flat6innovations.com) reading about the IMS in general, he answers most questions clearly and concisely. Why can some earlier motors be retrofitted vs. later ones; The earlier motors' IMS bearing was "pressed in" fit and can be extracted, later motors IMS bearing were fitted inside a concave section and only could be removed by disassembling the motor and splitting the case. That's my understanding at least.

Buy a 2006 or newer 987.1 and feel very confident.

Buy a 2009 or newer 987.2 and the IMS is no more.
