Hello and here are my first questions about buying a Boxster
 

Hello gang!
I am a new Porsche Boxster fanatic located in beautiful, sunny and dry San Diego. I got the Boxster bug and now cannot think of anything else-to the detriment of my employer.
So I have read I think all of the posts on this great site and have several question which I hope you can help me with. I am looking for a base Boxster with no option whatsoever except windscreen. I do not race or even drive fast due to the conditions of my parole-but that is another story. But I do intend to drive it long distances and enjoy the views. I want a new car and will be buying in the February 2007 time frame. So with that here are my questions:

1-Pricing- I got an internet quote for $2500 over invoice for a 2006 Boxster from and LA Dealer. Edmonds shows the list of the base Boxster to be $45k with a invoice price of $39k. That means I could theoretically walk out of the dealer with a price of about $42k. Does that seem realistic? Has anyone pocked up a 2006 for under $45k. can anyone recommend a dealer in So Cal?

2-Power outlet: Is there a place on the base Boxster where you can plug in your cell phone or is that an option. I read posting on the subject but it was not clear.

3-Is the ground clearance a problem for speed bumps? And how forgiving is the Boxster to bottoming out?

4-Is the owners manual with service information available on PDF for free or purchased? I want to read it before I buy to make sure there are no surprises.

5-What is the sacrosanct movie of Porsche Lovers? IS it Risky Business? I have a couple of Harley and when I got them I had to get Easy Rider and a collection of other biker trash movies to help me to fit into the life style.

6-What do you do in case of a flat tire?

7-Are there factory tours in Finland where they make the Boxsters? Has anyone gone on one?

Kavlono, did you mean February 2006? Or is it truely February 2007?

Kavlono, you'll be hard-pressed to find a Boxster with no options or only Windstop, unless you do a custom order.

Pioneer Centres Porsche in SD looks pretty aggressive on pricing. Go to Porsche's web-site, then select "locate dealer", you can select California, and see all of the dealers inventory.

As for a flat tire in the 987's, they give you a tire repair/inflation kit for minor road-side repairs. Until you can get to a dealer or tire shop. You also have limited access to Porsche's Roadside Assistance.

I'm going to agree with bmussatti that Pioneer is a good place to start shopping and where I bought mine. They have quite a large Boxster inventory on hand. I'm going to disagree though with his other point, in that Pioneer usually has one or two poorly-optioned vehicles on hand. I bought the most base model you can buy...it had floormats. Fortunately it was the color I was looking for. However, when negotiating with them, I had them include a windscreen and color wheel caps in the transaction, and if you find yourself in a similar situation, I suggest you do the same. There aren't many Porsche options that can be installed at the dealer so you're limited in what you can put on a due-bill. The only other option I wanted was Litronics, which also can't be installed after-market if you want self-adjustment. However the base headlights on the 987 are excellent and the Litronics aren't necessary. You'll probably notice that there are a good number of heavily optioned Boxsters on dealer lots that don't have Litronics, surprisingly enough. That's a testament to the quality of the standard headlights and most folks who say you "have to have Litronics" have no idea what the improved headlights on the 987 are like to drive with.

Power outlet: Is there a place on the base Boxster where you can plug in your cell phone or is that an option.

I don't know about cell-phone integration with PCM, but if you're talking about 12v power sources, there are actually three. The cigarette lighter itself, there's a second one in the center console, and there's a third one in the passenger footwell.

Absolutely it's a problem, not for speed bumps because the chassis is incredibly stiff and absorbs bumps well, but when entering or exiting curbed areas. The car is forgiving though in that there are "plates" running along the bottom covering almost the entire car. The plates at the front of my car are scuffed from a couple of incidents, but of course can't be seen. I guess it's the front overhang that causes problems because my 350SLK which has similar overall build dynamics doesn't have a problem with this.

You can buy one I'm sure, but probably not cheap. Didn't look like any surprises to me, 20k service intervals.

What do you do in case of a flat tire?

You pray it's punctured on the tread and not the sidewall. There's an inflation system, but I haven't investigated it too much, fortunately. I would agree that the lack of a spare is...disconcerting.

I'm in Coronado. I moved here from the Village and still go there every other day to swim in the Cove-year round!

Thanks for all the helpful information. I already sent an email to Pioneer requesting a quote on the base model they have in stock just to get an idea where they are in pricing.

Can't wait to drive down Prospect with my new car!
