Subtle High pitch whine?
I have noticed recently that there is a high pitch whine sound when the engine is running. I hear it more when in my garage since it will bounce the sound off the walls, not loud enough to hear when driving. The best way I can describe it is like someone running a saw a few houses away. (When i first heard it i actually thought it was a neighbor runnung a table saw or trimming grass nearby).
I recently had the water pump replaced at my dealer and I am wondering if maybe the new pump could be the cause? Thoughts? I suppose I should get out of the car and try to figure where it is coming from.... I am hoping this doesn't mean the new pump is bad...although I would imagine it would be covered since it was recently done. |
I have heard that whine as well.
Also noticed it when in the garage Like a high pitched dentist drill in the distance. I think its normal and perhaps part of the vacuum or induction system sounds? I don't think I ever noticed it during the warmer weather. |
I can attest to the whine. It is the normal whir of the belt driven accessories. I have heard it in my car, and many a friend's car. Now, if there is another whine you are speaking about that occurred just after the water pump was installed, you may want to look into that.

Awesome thanks! I must have just missed it before...it has gotten colder here recently as well so perhaps related...

Any newly discovered sound should be checked out by your dealer. I would never trust any unusual sounds as "normal" until you've had my mechanic tell me personally that it was okay. You're the only one who will pay if there is a problem developing.

Could be the SAI system, tends to run more in colder weather to reduce start-up emmissions.
My whine was fairly noticeable, but ceased immediately upon ejection of the ex-wife. :D |

Yeah I had a chuckle at that too. I do find I am riding more and more with the dog...something about "too hot" or "too cold" or "will mess up the hair" hehehe. Dog is much more open to rides with the top down. :)
