New Boxster Spoiler?…Anyone Tried It?
 

Here is an article I found about getting a HOT NEW SPOILER from a Cayman to a newer 987 Boxster, will this work for us 986s as well? Anyone try this? Can any of you technical folks see why this would not work? Are the "posts" on the spoiler the SAME DISTANCE APART?

Installing the 987.1 Cayman Spoiler on a Boxster

For anyone interested, here is the instruction to swap the Boxster spoiler assembly for the Cayman one.

This is direction to swap your 987.1 Boxster spoiler to 987.1 Cayman spoiler. The swap is relatively straight forward. It took me about 30 minutes (with pictures taking) and can be easily done with a small drill bit (don’t’ worry, it’s not for drilling), a torx bit and 13mm socket.

Parts needed:
Cayman spoiler (lower): 987 504 623 00
Cayman spoiler (upper): 987 504 619 00
Oval HD screw (Qty: 7): 999 919 233 07

Here is what the picture of the plastic rivets pulled part, and the bag of oval HD
screws. Note how the expanding plastic rivets work – center plastic pin goes in middle and that “fans” the rivet itself.

I was wondering the same thing about whether the cayman spoiler would fit the Boxster 986 or if there is an aftermarket spoiler that looks like that?.

Look no further.

There is also the Cayman RS wing which is a bit bigger.

According to the poster:
they fit all 987.1 and 987.2 Porsche Cayman and Boxsters .
The Boxster requires the Cayman Bottom piece wich I have a nice deal at SUNCOAST PORSCHE worked out that includes the 7 OEM screws (under 85.00) !!

Just to be clear, the Cayman parts will not fit the 986.

There are aftermarket Cayman style spoilers that are made to fit the 986, check ebay. But the Cayman parts do not fit.

Here is an aftermarket "Cayman Like" spoiler. Great price at $250 including finished paint color and shipping.

For those of you that have installed the retractable wing.

Have you noticed a difference in high speed handling?

I like the look but think the stock spoiler is more functional.

The wing helps get the Dangermobile up to 227.3 mph ! And that's just during a 1/4
mile !

227.3 mph Is that attributed to the reduced drag of the wing? :D

These are nice. Are they of similar shape to a 987 variant? The stock design has a shape that looks like it would give a high degree of spoiling capability; reducing the lift of the concave body shape. I am curious as to whether this shape has enough spoiling properties....perhaps it does if the shape is close to the 987 type. Perhaps it produces comparable down force to counter act lift.

might try this on my 986

I've been interested in this spoiler, for my 986, for some time and I wrote to the PCA Technical guru regarding it as a substitute for the OEM spoiler. He wrote that the OEM is more than a spoiler it is an air dam and designed to give max down force when in use. He cautioned using this wing as the main part of it, the air dam itself, had to be removed. So, those of you using it what are your experiences with it at speeds above 75 mph when it deploys?

I haven't noticed any difference and would think that one would need to be doing 120 plus to feel the back end lightening. (But I'm not a tester and not a professional driver, just an enthusiast)

...as one of the folks posted above, the OEM pop-up spoiler is actually a "Gurney Flap".

The way it works is simple, when it pops up, it creates a high pressure area on the trunk lid. The faster you drive, the larger the high pressure area becomes. As you drive faster and faster and faster, the high pressure area fills forward from the spoiler, up the trunk lid, all the way to the roll bar if you go fast enough. So, the faster you drive, the more downforce you create.

Those aftermarket spoilers that let air pass THROUGH them kill this downforce.

Save your money.

I bought mine from forum member Joe Toth. Its $250 plus shipping and I notice no diff up to 90, haven't went any faster. It solid like the factory, no air passes through since it only replaces the factory spoiler top.
