Clear coat repair? Repaint?

Guys im sick to death about this but i was washing my car and i had 3spots on the hood that the clear coat has completely peeled away. The largest one is approx. 3/8"x2". The other 2 are much smaller but very noticeable. Goes all the way down to the metallic artic silver. Is there a way to repair this or do I have to get the hood pepainted? I've seen some clear coat repair kits online but am a bit leary of em. I suppose a call to the local body shop is in order. I really dont have the money for a repaint right now. Any insight or exp. w/ this?

I have not heard of anything but, I would check with the dealer and see if thats not covered or a recall of some kind.
If it is only the clear your body shop should be able to just prep and put a new coat of clear on your hood.

I have a patch on the front bumber where the clearcoat is off. I showed it to my dealer service and he went on to point out a few paint imperfections that are normally really hard to notice... but it was enough to conclude that my previous owner had the front bumber repainted (apparently poorly).

Sand it and respray clearcoat only if basecoat is fine.

When the roof of my bmw e30 M3 was repainted the painter was not satisfied by the clearcoat result he just put on. He sanded it and made a new layer. I was sceptic about this but turned out to be marvelous.

Just don't look at the car after sanding before respraying the clearcoat. You will get sick and loose all fate :-)

Hey is it possible to just repaint the clear coat? Can you spot spray it or do you have to do the entire panel? I just got home from a local body shop and the price seemed awful high to me. The quote was for removing hood, sanding, stripping, repaint, new clear coat, and sanding/buffing, price was $490. I'm sure this is a fair price for all the work they were planning to do, but im not able to pay that at the moment. I was hoping to have the clear coat resurfaced instead, if I'm able to find a shop to do it. I also asked about painting the interior surfaces. He seemed a bit leary of it. Said it would peel away after a week. I'm gonna call around a bit and see what else is available around here. Keep the comments coming guys, I can't stand to see the blemishes on such a prominent location.

It seems to me that you are describing your paint situation to be missing clear in a few spots down to the color or base coat. Most likely, you will need to have the shop D/A or buzz down the clear almost to the base coat just to get the clear to stick. It is possible to get new clear on the panel, but most shops will prefer to take it down to the base coat and then reapply the color coat with new clear on top to insure proper adhesion. $500 or less is normal for this type of work. If you have a silver car, most shops would either blend the color into the fenders and adjacent panels or charge 1 hour additional labor to tint the color properly for a good match.
2 hours or so would be spent prepping the panel to accept paint. 3 to 4 hours would be charged for refinishing, 1 hour for buffing and de-nibbing the paint from imperfections etc.

Just to qualify, I run a large collision facility in NJ!

Sounds just about what i've been hearing everywhere. Seems i am gonna have to save up a little more money. Btw, guys approx. what does a full car paint job run on a boxster? I have several small scratches and dings that I'd love to get repaired while im spending money. $700 for just hood is price i was quoted. If i can get whole car done for about $2500 I may just do that. After all its a really small car and not a lot of car to cover. Lotta detail though. Has anyone had quote on fair price?

I'd be interested in that, too. Perhaps our NJ body shop friend has some insight.
I have a feeling the same paint job is $4,000 on a Chevy, $8,000 on a Porsche, and $15,000 on a Ferrari.
