Attention PC technology luminaries
I once was no the bleeding edge of technology but now I need your help. Can the device in this link somehow be used to keep an eye on our cars? Could I be in Atlanta but still know my car is safe in NY with something like this?

Comon nobody else wants to hook their car to the net? (plead bump)

it will tell you some things.
as long as your car is parked in your garage and has access to your home's WiFi connection. however, if a thief breaks in and drives off (or an insolent teenager) all you will know is that it's not at home anymore. not where it is. it also tells you if it was "bumped", got wet, on fire... honestly, it would seem more sensible to hook a camera pointing towards the car and feed it to the web... |
thanks Tony, I'll look into that. I have family on the job that will look in on my car but they also have made it clear to me that there is no such thing as an impenetrable garage. I plan on raising the insurance against loss while it's stored too, thanks again.

Folks have been building devices like this for years with Arduino's.
You can create virtually any kind of functionality with it. Add any kind of sensor device available, GPS, accelerometer, gyro, temp, pressure, light, sonar, Blue Tooth, WiFi, strain gauages etc. You could duplicate that devices functionality in a couple hours for under $50 Wonder what the Twine costs? I have been thinking of an Arduino data logger taking data off the OBDII port for tuning and reviewing track performance. |

They have several sensors and those need to be explained as the average person who it seems to be geared too will not know how the sensors can be utilized. Right now it detects wet, a vibration, magnetic latch.... only one of two options, yes or no. The Arduino solution could measure the degree as some of those sensors have a scale of ranges. Plus take it to the next step and DO something physical in response to the detection, like turn something on or off. On the cost side you could have this thing produced for maybe $15 with all the sensors in China. Now I'm starting to think of a competing product. But, I digress. My experience with Arduino's has been with flight stabilization control so far (Drones), and they perform amazingly well at that complex task. |
if you look at the kickstarter description, they're taking on the tech side with a "wizard" type interface, the device is not meant to be programmed. you use the web page and set up simple rules - if bumped, send message. if it gets wet, send a txt, etc.
fyi. the retail price is planned at $99. still one of my fav. youtube videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lCUGPixEnk |
