LED taillights question

Hey, does anybody own those OEM style LED taillights on EBay? I was looking at them and from the pics the clear on top look too clear, and the pics of the smoked lenses look too smoked to match up with the OEM. The Boxsters clear OEM taillights have a light bit of smoke to the top, as well as the clear side markers and bottom of the clear headlights. A
I'd like to stick with an OEM look as much as possible to match my new clear headlights and side markers.

I had them in clear. Thought they looked great. You be the judge;

Those do look good.

I was looking also at these

And I guess these are the ones on your yellow Box....which look much better on your car than I expected...
I wider if the clear ones are really clear, or have the same light smoke as stock. The smoked depo ones look darker than stock.

DEPO LEDs on my car (smoked)

Various shots of them on my car.

They actually look better in the flesh!

However ...
  • LEDs are only for brake and fog (and very bright)
  • Regular driving light is regular a bulb.
  • Turn signals are bulbs.
  • You loose the DRL altogether (small bulb in the corner of the OEMs).
  • They do not sit 100% flush (2nd pic). However it's barely noticeable.

Personally, I prefer the look to the OEMs which kinda look dated now.

Yes, mine were from Option Racing. No fitment issues as others, but not full LED as stated.

Looks good on your white, may be too dark if thats an accurate photo for my black box. I don't want the top taillight to disappear altogether.
I was hoping those were either lighter, or the clear one were lightly smoked like the OEMs...

That does look good on black...they are cheap enough I guess I could alway resell them.

Skrapmot 09-03-2012 11:28 AM

Ok, you guys convinced me, i ordered some smoked ones. I'm installed my new headlights next week, and already got the clear smoke side markers on. I wanted some clear taillights to match. I may rewire them a bit to get the fog lights to work bilaterally.

tuanle16 10-21-2012 06:24 PM

what did you do to get fog lights to work on both side in the rear?

Only one light is lit... Drivers side.. you won't get both unless you run a wire across the trunk.. But really, do you want it to look like you have your brakes on,,?

An alternative is to spend $11 on VHT Nightshades in Red and paint the orange away!

Looks like a 550, but don't tell anyone it's not.

I placed LEDs elsewhere - interior (blue w/white map light), LEDs on mid brake strip, LEDs in side markers that have been converted to turn signals, LED's in turn signals to round it out! I have the "splicing tools" to do ALL the rest in LEDs - just not wanting to cut up wiring.

Those lights are nice but you may be able to do more with less. To each their own.

Skrapmot 10-22-2012 06:44 PM

The LED lights on eBay turned out nice, but I did have some issues with the wiring being to short on the drivers side, and had to splice it and lengthen.
They are really bright! In my rear view mirror, it almost looks like I have red tinted headlights behind me...I feel sorry for the drivers behind me, although I'm sure it helps prevent tailgaters.

My taillights have LED's for park & brake. Bulb's for turn signal and reverse lights..
Having the bulb's for turn signals did not require swapping out the flasher relay..
The lights also had the same wire connector, simple plug & play..

I almost bought these for my silver car when a mishap required the replacement of the passenger side. What I didn't care for, at least in the photos, is all the small circles inside these lights. The single, OEM replacement cost much more than a pair of these, but now that I actually see them on the cars, they don't look so bad. But a bit surprised that they're not completely LED.

tony_fury 10-22-2012 08:16 PM

I replace a set on my Tacoma trunk years ago and they were the same, bulb for turn and reverse light.. Brake & Park are LED's

Skrapmot 10-22-2012 10:17 PM

We have to two cars at home that have OEM LED taillights, and those also have bulbs for turn signals also. Maybe it's a little more pleasing when blinking than LED which is faster on and off.

My old Infiniti had all LED bulbs and the blinker was super bright! Probably caused a few seizures behind me.

I sure do! I only use my double fogs on the freeway when some Ahole is riding my bumper. A quick on and off sets him back another car length and I didn't have to turn off the cruise control (by tapping the brakes).

LED turn signal

I purchased the Depo tail light's and followed the instructions in the link below and now have LED turn signals and tail lights. Had to install resistors and instruction step #5 is incorrect. I had to install one resistor wire to the black wire and the other to the red to prevent hyper blink.

Not sure it was worth the trouble but I like it.

Rear Lights

These are what I fitted to my 2002 Boxster S Artic Silver, I think they look great, more in keeping with the factory Litronic I have at the front .
