The noise isn't the issue for me, its the heat. Last trip I made this summer, any metal items in the trunk got so hot I couldn't pick them up.

Hmmm.
You said you are replacing the coolant tank. Was your coolant tank leaking last summer? (Did you have to top off coolant regularly?)
My old tank leaked and back then, my trunk was definitely hotter.
I changed my coolant tank last month and it is not as hot.

BTW, be sure to check for the coolant in the liner.
In my case, there was at least a pint of coolant soaked in the bottom liner.
