I got my car in Dec '11, and up until last week I'd spent:

Wind deflector clips and mounting kit - about $50.
Replacement catalytic converter clip - $20
Air filter, serpentine belt, cabin air filter - about $100 including shipping.
Rear sway bar bushings - $50
Wheel alignment - $65
Mechanic fee for checking a noise in the clutch - $90
Oil change (previous owner was rich and stupid, didn't change the oil in two years) - $150

$525 for 7 months is fine in my book.

Sounds like your major problem is that you're paying somebody else to do your thinking/troubleshooting for you. That's fine if you have the money, but I don't so I do what I can myself. The internet is an amazing resource, so take advantage of it.

Last week I ordered a good jack and will get some jack stands once it arrives. This will let me work on the brakes and clutch when the time comes.
