Wind Deflector---Can you tint?
So i want to have my boxster windows tinted but first want to see if anyone has any ideas on how to tint the lexan wind deflctor?? I looked at the spray tint and thats a big NO...

I don't see why you could tint it the same way the windows are tinted. Its only film. You can probably do that yourself.
|
You can also take your panel to an automotive glass shop and have them replicate it in tinted safety glass, which is much nicer...........
|
you cant tint lexan but i like the idea of getting a new piece.....Thanks!

Lexan actually lets off a gas when heated. If one were to apply tint over lexan, they would notice bubbles forming when the car got hot from sitting out in the sun.

Didn't know that but I always like learning something new :) Great tip JFP.

Maybe this is what you are looking for:
Porsche boxster Windscreen, Porsche boxster Windschott, Custom Windscreen, Laser Etched Windscreen Quite a few of us on this forum bought these from a prior sponsor a few years back, love the one I had made. |
Wow, that's got a rather high price tag to it, but they do look great, and I'd certainly consider one. I was also wondering about tinting the deflector, but after reading jesseborgelt's nugget I think I'll pass and look into one of these eventually.

I didn't know you can't tint lexan when I had mine tinted last year. It is holding up very nicely. What I like about tinting the wind deflector is this. It is tinted top up or top down. Take the piece to a quality tinter. It cost me all of $10 to have it done.

I've talked to my tint guy and he recommended not to tint it. Is yours exposed to a lot of sun ?
|
I would not say the top is down every day, but it is down 3 or 4 times a week.

Just had mine at an auto glass shop today to see about replicating in tinted safety glass. I was told that it was too thin, and that the laminate glass started at 1/4". I have a 2002, so I don't know if there is difference in the 987s? Has anyone else had luck with this?

You may want to post a question on their FB page https://www.facebook.com/windrestrictor#!/windrestrictor?sk=wall
and ask if they would provide a discount to the members of the 986forum as they have in the past, at least worth a try. Also if you did not want etching the plain tinted windscreen is $119.00. I think I paid about $75.00 with "Porsche" etched in on the bottom of the screen at the time due to discount provided to forum, others got theirs free of charge for the use of car for advertisment (look at the Guiness beer one) he was/is a forum member. |
Come to think of it. Mine does get a lot of Sun. The Boxster is my Wife's daily driver. It goes to work all day. It has the big plastic rear window that is clear and clean. It is cheap to tint it. It works guys. Just don't buy cheap tint though. It has to be quality film.

it may be worth a try
