Cluster Part Number discrepancy???

I recently installed a Gauge Cluster face on both mine and a friend's, we have the same year, options(both are 01, manual tranny, 2.7l) but we noticed that our gauges have different part numbers- mine starts with a 996 and his with a 986. Why is this so? Any thoughts?
