erratic rpms off-idle

2001 Boxster S. Not sure if the following indicates a problem, but I thought it was somewhat odd.

When the car is stopped, out of gear, idling, and I just try to raise the idle a tad bit by stepping on the accelerator (leaving my foot there), the result is that the car revs slowly up to 1200 rpm, then comes down to 800, then revs up again etc.

Is this an artifact of the e-gas not knowing what to do with the throttle input? Or does this point to some other underlying problem? The car seems to run just fine.

Could somebody please try this out on their e-gas car and report on what happens? Thanks very much!

Once the car is at 1200, do you keep your foot on the gas pedal or take it off. If you take it off and the car is hunting for a steady idle by ramping up and down between say 600 and 1000 rpm, then you're seeing a typical symptom when the MAF is dirty or there is a leak in the secondary air system.

Thanks... I keep the foot steady on the accelerator, trying to keep the rpms constant...
