Another dead CDR23

Radio started acting up this week. Sound was from one station but display showed another. Began pushing buttons and a few minutes later - no sound. Head unit seems to function, i.e., volume changes with knob, AM/FM buttons work, CD works, but no sound. Spent a couple days searching this topic and believe me, there are a lot of posts on this. So I tried most of the tricks, i.e., lock door with remote, unlock door, (that didn't work), pulled the #8 and #9 fuses overnight (that didn't work), haven't pulled the battery cable yet and haven't removed the radio (waiting for removal key). So my question is, how do I troubleshoot this? Hate to replace it if it's just a bad wire or connection? Car is an '03 base. So it is 10 years old and maybe the amp is just gone. Would love to put a double din unit in, but that looks like a lot of work and I don't possess those "finesse" skills. And from what I've read, it's not as simple as just installing an aftermarket unit due to the fiber optic system. Sigh, it seems like this year, it's one problem after another on my vehicles.
