Was going to buy an 02, bought an 01

The PPI on the 02 I was interested in was HORRENDOUS.
--BUT--
Found a barely used car (42K miles) in Santa Monica today and jumped on it. To my surprise it had Escort SRX jammers installed though I can't figure out where the radar antenna is haha. Anyway here are some shots. What is that tiny thing the right front grille? It might be the Escort radar antenna but I can't tell.

More shots tomorrow - in the sun hopefully.

Never mind. Just realized that it was a temperature sensor. Doesn't look like the Escort system came with the radar detector antenna haha.

Nice ride!!

That is the 10,000Kv Ionizer. DO NOT push the Emergency Flashers button if there is anything in front of the car, whatever you do!

tonycarreon 03-19-2012 07:56 AM

great color choice, and one of the few i've seen that came with the air intake grills still black (instead of the faded gray) so i don't have to say "paint those intake grills!" - take some good pics and post your favorite one to the http://986forum.com/forums/show-tell-gallery/34334-official-black-boxster-thread.html

maybe we should have a black boxster get together / fun run some day.

NIce! welcome!!!

I hope that buyers looking for cars read your comment on the 02 PPI. Too many people think that all it takes to find a good car is an eye for wear & tear and a quick drive around the block. Good job on getting the car fully checked so you knew what you were potentially getting into.

And nice 01!

Turns out the radar unit is attached but I cannot find it anywhere. Was flying down Antonio in Orange County today when Ka band went off (first band alert I've heard in the 200 miles I've done since purchase) and I shat a brick.

This car is amazing.
Just still losing sleep over the IMS issue. I have a feeling that concern will go away, but I cannot afford a new engine, or even a new car really if that were to happen :/

tonycarreon 03-21-2012 03:56 AM

here's the diagram of the "typical" install. look up in the bumper and on the license plate frames.

I know how you feel, there is a lot of scare mongering about the IMS issue... it almost ruins the wonderful feeling of being a new Porsche owner. I read somewhere in this forum that those that bleat on about it the most are those trying to sell solutions etc. and are invested in the fear aspect. I believe statistically the chance of this happening is very low.
However I did get an aftermarket warranty because of it, 5 years / 100 000 miles. Who knows, I might need it... I might not and it might pay out, it might not... I will find out next month when I take it for a service at a dealership and point out a few things. Let's see what happens.
My advice is to just forget about the IMS thing and enjoy your car.

hmmmm really? It's not on mine, and there's no grommet where the wires would come through either. And like db, mine is an o1 base. Was it an added option or something? just curious.

Bob O 03-21-2012 07:35 AM

Nice car db! Enjoy it. I'm gonna have to get after mine with the polish and wax to make it look new again like yours does :)

dblaalid 03-22-2012 03:16 PM

Here are some more shots of the car.
I was upset the Audi Santa Monica didn't allow a PPI, but I lucked out. Hergesheimer looked at it today and said everything was it great shape! Those guys are awesome. They had 4 different people listen to the IMS bearing with the scope and they all agreed it was very very quite. Thank god.
Additionally, the radar antenna was installed BEHIND the bumper. A SUPER clean install granted the range is incredibly limited by the bumper itself… Will probably remove and place somewhere in left of right intakes grills.

just do the IMS swap. If you decide to sell, it will be that much more attractive to buyers and you'll have a bit more peace of mind. Personally, I wouldn't drive it another mile before having this done. In my book, if you buy a Carrera or Boxster for $X. Just add $1200 right on top. Meanwhile most new Boxster or Carrera purchasers will go and drop $1200 on wheels or new exhaust as the first order of business. does not compute...

and get some clear side markers...time to harvest those pumpkins.

Congrats on getting a SoCal Porsche. I think I'll be doing the same when I add Pcar #2. A car that is driven year-round in warm climate is what I like to see.

dblaalid 03-22-2012 06:34 PM

I honestly don't really want to spend the money right now. I don't need a clutch and I don't want to pay labor twice. I know it's worth it but I think I can wait until the clutch job in 15K miles. Famous last words? Maybe…

dblaalid 03-22-2012 06:57 PM

That said I ABSOLUTELY plan on doing the swap, but I make most of my money over the summer (I'm still a student but summer time I'm a software developer) and would rather not blow even more cash now if I don't HAVE to, and I'll just do it later this summer.

dblaalid 03-29-2012 08:53 PM

Here's a shot of our garage now:

makes sense but until you do the swap, I would put minimal miles on it. Some say your chances of having catastrophic failure are minimal but is it really? It sounds like you don't have money to burn at momment, all the more reason to invest in addressing a highly controversial and known problem. Murphy's law.

p.s.
go to autogeek and order a gallon of FinishKare 425. This was a huge time saver when I owned a black car. This spray kept the car cleaner, longer. When you run your fingers over the teflony like finish you'll see what I mean. I'm not the least brand loyal but this particular product must have some propietary thing going, I've not felt that finish with any other product, and I have a whole garage full of over-priced crap.

p.s.
was the oil changed by the seller before it was sold? If not did you crack open and unroll the oil filter?
