when did your AOS fail?

so i hope i'm not about to jinx myself, but my '01 AOS still hasn't failed. at nearly 97k miles. did the "oil cap" test again today and it still comes right off with no effort. wondering, of those who have had to replace theirs, when did it finally fail?

Cool story. If it's gonna go, may as well go big.

Mine failed at 75k, although I think it was weather related

I was expecting it.. and doing oil cap test every week, and it was passing with flying colors

Then I went for a vacation in December and turned down the heat in the house.. when I came back it was waaaay sub freezing in Seattle, and the garage was frozen, actually a bottle of water on the table near my box was all frozen.

Next day I drive to work.. and BAM.. well more like SQUICK and oil light on the dash going on and off... did the oil cap test, bought new AOS from local indy and spent 4 hours until 2 am changing it..

Next day.. my daily driver was up and running

PS; If you're gonna change AOS, buy one of those clamp tools, I spend 3 hours taking AOS out, one of the clamp wouldn't come out no matter what I did, installation back was 20 min

2002 S at 80k.

Add to the question:

What was done to the engine prior to AOS failure.

In my case it was Eng oil overfill.

About two weeks ago at 70k, although my mechanic noticed some minor symptoms from it starting to go at 67k. Given it was 13 years old when I replaced it.

I dont think that is the only comfirming factor. You should open the TB and intake cross hoses and check for oil. My oil fill cap test was good but, oil in the hoses. Turns out the oil fill tube from the filler hole to the engine had cracks at the ribbed portion.

Ghostrider 310 03-14-2012 02:54 AM

I replaced one and was absolutely shocked at how poorly designed the accompanying tube is. Not only is it overpriced, there is no accommodation for variance like one would have in a flexible line. It's supposed to fit like a puzzle piece and you get one shot at it. If not, the Faberge egg, legendary for brittle polymers the Germans chose for their overpriced pipe snap and the delicate end breaks in your fingers.

Thanks for that tidbit....it has been duly noted. :)

2002S, failed at 65k, few weeks ago. Didnt have the whole smoky production. I could hear chirping at idle, and stumbling/trying to stall as well when idling. Checked oil cap and it was very tight. When removed, car wanted to die. New AOS and all is well, idle is smooth. Car actually feels much stronger too.

2002 base, AOS went at 82k in july 2011 in bloody hot weather.

thstone 03-17-2012 08:54 AM

1999, 104,000 miles, AOS still going fine...

Kenny Boxster 03-17-2012 10:00 AM

2000 2.7l 76,500 miles AOS no problemo.
