Watch the video at the 1min mark. Could there be an issue with the transmission? The dash lights looked like a blocking Christmas tree from manual to 5th.

My guess is nice motor but no go.

or it could be confused by the dual shifting options...

Guess ekam beat me to it, I was going to post this up too.

I have no idea what's up with that shifter business. Everything was looking ok up to that point. I'd even take the practically browned headlights, but that shifter business is unacceptable and confusing.

80% Finished... I wonder what the 20% is ??

Pininfarina must be blowing up this guy's phone. I had to look at the pic like a puzzle in highlights magazine to catch that seamlessly integrated second shift device and accompanying rear cover plate.

+1. People keep talking about this second shifter but for the life of me I couldn't see it. He must have some mad fab skillz...

i remember when i was researching v8 conversions that he was a valid contributor to the dialogue; i think it's legit. the second shifter just allows him to drive the tip like a clutchless manual; about as cool as a tip can get, i suppose.

I hate to expose my obvious ignorance of the finer points of transmission theory, but I'm not following you. There is only one transmission in the car; it can only behave like a clutchless manual (PDK, F1, SMG, Cambiocorso, etc.) if that's what he installed. If he installed an automatic transmission with the ability to be shifted with paddles or the shift lever (Tiptronic, etc.) then I don't see what the other stick adds. That sort of shifting could already be done with the existing Tiptronic shifter.

Either way, this is, shall we say, an inelegant solution.

sequential vs non-?

But it's a gated shifter with, what, 8 shift gates? A sequential only has two positions: up and down. And in fact, that's all a Tiptronic with paddles does is take a standard auto and give you sequential shifting with up and down paddles or side to side movement of the stick. So I'm not seeing how this second shifter adds anything.

Again, I'm not professing to be the expert on it; I'd just love to hear the reasoning behind that second stick growing out of the radio hole.

The Radium King 03-08-2012 04:43 PM

a sequential shifter goes through gears sequentially; 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 3, 3 to 2, etc. his 'mod' allows him to skip gears on the upshift and the downshift; 1 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 2, etc.

i think.

Oh, okay, you're saying his is non-sequential -- thought you were saying the Tiptronic was non-sequential and his now makes it sequential.

I really don't know much about automatics, but I don't think you can just randomly skip around from one gear to one that's not "next door." Again, I think this is a feature of the transmission, not the shift lever. But I could be wrong, I'll give you that.

This car made it on "Nice price or crack pipe" on Jalopnik.com

Madjackdog 03-08-2012 10:11 PM

It saddens my heart to realize that this car was once hot off the assembly line and brand spanking new. You gotta think that when Car Karma kicks in, this car's going to return as a Ferrari 458.
