i did this hack on my 2000 boxster and it works great! :dance: :dance:
it took me about a minute to do it. it is located on the upper right coner of the fuse box (not in the fuse box).

Remember to check that your shifter is in neutral, especially after a valet pulls up!

That's why I never did this hack... I can just see someone launching my boxster into the garage wall, into another car, over a curb, etc. :eek:

I'd rather push in the clutch as a safety precaution.

:) I speak with the voice of experience. It's very common for second-gen Eclipse enthusiasts to disconnect their clutch switch (although we can just unplug ours--don't have to rig anything with tape). Reason being that with the heavy pressure plates we end up swapping to, a lot of excessive lateral load is placed on the crank thrust bearing--the release lever pivots on the end of it.

What fantastic design.

Anyhow, the second-gen Eclipses had a bit of an epidemic with premature thrust bearing wear, especially in the earlier models. Making it so that we could start the car without putting a bunch of lateral pressure on a dry thrust bearing just kind of made sense. :)

But yes, I've nearly put my Eclipse through a wall many times after getting back into the car after someone else has driven it. People tend to park in first gear, I tend to park in neutral...

I guess it's just the old fart in me. The '87 928 doesn't have a switch and the Jeep we just sold had it disconnected for off-road. It's what we're used to.

You know, I don't believe the Euro Boxster models have the switch. We were talking to a guy having no-start trouble in Ireland and suggested he check that switch. He says his will start without the clutch being depressed and asked "What switch? Can't you Americans put the car in neutral?" ROFL Then he got a quick lesson in how the American legal system works and why we have so many "idiot switches" on things.

You ought to see a valet in the 928. Reverse is where 1st normally is. I always tell them when I get out "please look at the shifter before you drive" so they don't throw it in reverse and take out a wall or another car. Just re-painted the shift knob cap and made the "R" red so it sticks out.

Don't think we'll do this to the Boxster, though. Since it's the wife's car I don't think she appreciates the old ways as much as I do.

The guys on the UK board have said that starting with the 987 they got our switch.
