2004 Boxster S v 2005 Boxster

I am looking to buy a Boxster and realize that I may be able to get a very slightly used regular 2005 Boxster or a used 2004 Boxster S for the same price. The 2005 Boxster is really not far off as far as specs are concerned...only about 18hp less and now available with a 6 speed and it might even weigh a tad less. I am wondering if the performance is close to the 04 Boxster S.

I had the same tough decision 5 months ago.

and test drove both, read nearly every forum online, and ended up with......
987 2.7L

never regret it.

power difference is there, but not enough to overshadow the new styling (int + exterior), better handling, better sound

overall, u can feel the improvement over nearly every department.
the interior quality is streets ahead.

there is more than just power when considering buying a car.
the overall experience is THE improtant factor.

I suggest u tet drive both, then decide. but the 987 is every bit better.

Yes, I would you suggest you drive both several times if possible.

Well the 987 is so much more solid than the older 986.

Tried a987S this wek, and compared to my 04 2.7 986 it is a world away in terms of build quality. Interior is so much better (albeit a few trim woes reported on early cars).

The gearchange is much shorter and more chunky (albeit not really any more precise)

The performance didn't blow me away (280 bhp vs my 228) but i wasn't paying a lot of attention to the speedo at the time.

All told the 987 is a much better car

For what it's worth, I love my '04 S, but have not driven the '05 standard or S. The choices you list are between two used cars. A third option--you might still be able to find a new '04 S at a dealership out there. I did in February, and got a good deal, I think ($46k vs. $60K sticker, with 18 in. carrera, bose, xenon). Don't know how that compares to used prices, or if there are still new '04s sitting in lots in August.
