What is this? (drainage pipe?)

I was doing some basic maintenance, when I noticed a loose drainage pipe next to the battery. I can't for the life of me see where it attaches to. Anyone know?http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1327942829.jpg

it's a vent for the battery and should be connected to it unless it's a ventless kind (like Optima) but that one sure looks like a regular lead-acid battery...

:)

that battery should have a connector on one end for the hose, or the connector is missing. Find one and attach that hose so it vents properly.

Please excuse my ignorance on the matter, but what is the purpose of a battery vent? None of my other cars required it. Is it important? Because I don't think I have the extension hose connector.

If I recall correctly, it's to allow overflow of Sulfuric acid or gasses to prevent the battery from exploding which I have seen but not in 30 years. Be advised, many batteries look sealed but actually have serviceable cells, I know the Interstate my 986 had was accessible as many are. If you allow the fluid level in a battery that can be serviced to go below a lead plate, nine times out of ten it's toast...

Most cars don't need a vent tube because they are in a ventilated area, the engine bay. The boxter battery it in a fairly well sealed space, the "Frunk".
