More power and soo much smoother after oil change?
I purchased my boxster from the previous owner who took meticulous care of the car. Before he sold me the car, he changed the oil and used Mobil 1 0w40 and told me I didn't need to change the oil, so I didn't. (I know most of us change the oil as soon as we purchase a car)
Works been super busy and I didn't haven't had a chance to change the oil until today after 7,000 miles, when my initial plan was to change it at 5,000 miles. The oil was pretty dark as expected. But after my oil change, it seems my engine is soo much smoother and has more power. Is this normal and expected? Wow! |
With synthetic oil 7k miles is not outside the normal operational life of the oil, in fact the original recommendation for oil changes when synthetic oils were introduced was 15k miles for many manufacturers. Some manufacturers have since reduced the recommended interval to change and there are many on these and other forums who change their oil even more frequently than 5k miles even thought they run synthetic oil.
Synthetic oil will get a dark brown color during normal use, it is not a very good indicator of the condition of your oil. Synthetic oil really does not break down like dino oil does, what actually wears out in the synthetic is not the oil itself but the additives that the manufacturer puts in like detergents, zinc compounds and cold weather additives. I am glad for you that your car seems to be running better but I would venture that it is largely the placebo effect. My car seems to run better when I change the oil and when I wash and wax it. Don't know why but it just seems that way. If your oil was truly only 7k miles old then there should be no big difference in the way it runs. |
Its not likely that the oil change would make any appreciable improvement to smoothness or power.
But even after saying that, I can guarentee that my car will seem newer and drive better tomorrow after I wash and polish it up. Guarenteed. :D |
I'm with land, I have felt the same effect, more with my truck than the Porsche. However, when one considers that placebos can sometimes have a healing power, maybe the power of our minds makes it a lil faster. Its not going to show up on any dyno but a crisp summer morning when you have just finished tweaking out the car is one of the enjoyments of being an enthusiast and why we are all here.

oil analysis
If you really want to find out what's up with your oil, have a look at Blackstone Labs, Blackstone Labs and then send them a sample for analysis.
